Martha Galarraga / vocals

Born in Havana, Cuba. Immersed in Yoruba culture, Afro-Cuban dance
and singing, since her birth, she was lead vocals for 5 years with
Conjuncto Folklorico National de Cuba, with whom she toured
throughout Europe, the USA, Mexico, Korea and China. After a few years
in Germany, she settled in France and accompanied Cuban pianist Omar
Sosa for 4 years. In 2002 she discovered Marseille while she was touring
for the album Latin American Christmas Carols. After she met with
percussionist Gustavo Ovalles and pianist Simon Bolzinger and through
the impulse given by producer Cathy Schlup, she created her own band,
Galarumba in autumn 2003. She is an expert in singing Yoruba as well as
Congo, Arará, Tumba Francesa, Franco Haitiano, Gagá, Carabali, Rumba,
Son, Chachacha, Mambo, Salsa songs, following in her father’s footsteps,
Lazaro Galarraga, a great authority on Yoruba songs, leader of Conjunto
Folklorico and one of the greatest Yoruba singers today. Her energy, her
ardour, her powerful voice and thorough knowledge of tradition make
here one of the best interpreters of Afro-Caribbean music. She has sung
with Felipe Cabrera, Bayuba Cante, Compañia Coral Negro, Havana
Street Funk, Afrekete, Oba Ilú, Rumbanana, Son de Caracas... She has
recorded with Simon Bolzinger, Omar Sosa, Felipe Cabrera, Bayuba
Cante, Afrekete and Oba Ilú.
